September 2021 – Normal People

Poem inspired by Normal People by Sally Rooney

What are you thinking about?
She researches the ideological backgrounds
of the journalists who
have heated debates about books they had not read.

Hypocritically disgusted by the drunkenness
of everyone around him-
the beer is cold but the glass is room temperature.
The last corner of the label peels off
folded between his fingers; feeling anxious.

I do sometimes think God made you for me;
there are worse things...
A crest of white spills over the lip of the bottle
and then disappears like air.
Why didn't I marry you?

There is no secret eagerness to be discovered-
no one can be independent of other people completely.

One response to “September 2021 – Normal People”

  1. […] Oh, what a novel. Out of all the books I read in 2021, none of them made me feel as much as Normal People. These feelings were predominately ones of anger, frustration, and disbelief– but to have an author evoke so much emotion simply by writing is something I respect and admire. If you want to relive the angst of first loves or really love to hate BOTH main characters in a novel, you should buy this book right now. For all of my thoughts, check out my review. […]
